Pope says Church must stand firm against “intolerant agnosticism”

…”Anyone who lives and proclaims the faith of the Church is on many points out of step with the prevalent way of thinking,” he said. “The approval of the prevailing wisdom, however, is not the criterion to which we submit.”

In the United States, a group last month started a petition on the White House website asking the administration of President Barack Obama to list the Catholic Church as a “hate group” because of its opposition to gay marriage.

“Today’s regnant agnosticism has its own dogmas and is extremely intolerant regarding anything that would question it and the criteria it employs,” the pope said.

Therefore the courage to contradict the prevailing mindset is particularly urgent for a bishop today. He must be courageous,” he said….(Source)

Benedict has officially been promoted as honorary blogger here at Socon or Bust.

Is this not what we’ve been yammering on about for the past few years?  And now Benedict has simply confirmed what is so patently obvious to the rest of us.  We have an ocean of bishops who simply do not have the courage to confront the culture.  And it’s not that complicated to figure out why, either.   They prefer being thought well of.  They want to go along to get along.  They’ll defend the Gospel when the Gospel is trendy.  When it’s not trendy, they go all “pastoral” on us and shut up, or worse, they’ll betray us at critical times when we need them most. It’s happened to me personally on more than one occasion.  That’s clearly not acceptable anymore (if it ever was).

Benedict says it is “particularly urgent” for bishops today to be courageous.  You called it Holy Father.

As we like to say in Canadianese, “Like grab a pair, eh?”

I sometimes marvel at what exactly our bishops think when they will be called to give an account before Jesus himself.  I think they will be speechless…much like they were on earth when they were required to teach and said next to nothing or offered some stupid tripe, when they were required to boldly preach the Gospel and confront a savage and barbarian age.
