One of our readers wrote a very respectful email to Fr. Raymond Gravel’s bishop to request the resignation of the embattled dissenting priest. Fr. Gravel was c.c.’ed on the email. Once again, the priest’s temper flared and he lashed out at our reader, who was gracious enough to forward the offensive message to us.
Below, I have translated the totality of Fr. Gravel’s email to English. The original French version is at the bottom of this post. Take a look.
Email from Fr. Gravel to a Socon or Bust reader:
Mr. XYZ, Before condemning, start by getting informed about what I teach… I have been a Catholic priest for 25 years and I certainly believe in the Church more than you do… If you are relying only on the statements of those who seek my condemnation, that’s not impressive…Do you know the gospel, Mister, that says not to judge…It seems to me that you missed this message of Christ! I never discredited Cardinal Ouellet…He is capable of doing it himself; we’ve seen it in Québec since he is Archbishop… I don’t think I’m the only one to deplore his public statements, when 94% of the Québec population directly opposes the statements of Cardinal Ouellet…Don’t tell me either that this is the Gospel, because Christ in the Gospel never condemned anyone. Only narrow-minded people like you condemn others. Fortunately, there aren’t many of them… What do you want to condemn me about? Abortion? I am against it just like you! On homosexuality? I say exactly what the Church teaches: we must not discriminate against them, we must welcome them, we must accompany them…That’s what I’ve been doing since I’ve been a priest. I believe in the Christ of the Gospel… Isn’t he the foundation of the Church? In what respect can you condemn me? Before casting the stone, look at yourself in the mirror… maybe you could cast it at yourself! Raymond Gravel priest
This is sad. Please pray for Fr. Gravel and his bishop.
Fr. Gravel seems incoherent and contradicts himself. Even as he denies ever discrediting Cardinal Ouellet, the next two sentences proceed to do just that: “He is capable of doing it himself [i.e. discrediting himself]; we’ve seen it in Québec since he is Archbishop… I don’t think I’m the only one to deplore his public statements, when 94% of the Québec population directly opposes the statements of Cardinal Ouellet”.
Is this the statement of a man who respects Cardinal Ouellet and adheres to Church teaching? Read what he actually said about Cardinal Ouellet here.
Other clear problems in this email include:
- Pride and condescension: “I have been a Catholic priest for 25 years and I certainly believe in the Church more than you do.”
- Misunderstanding of the Christ’s teaching on judging others: “Don’t tell me either that this is the Gospel, because Christ in the Gospel never condemned anyone.” He doesn’t seem to understand that while Christians cannot judge individuals, i.e. make pronouncements on the state of their soul, we must make judgments about actions every day in order to live moral lives. Maybe Fr. Gravel should re-read the passages where Christ lambastes the scribes and Pharisees. The Apostles had some goodies too.
- More incoherence: right after the quote above about not condemning, he says: “Only narrow-minded people like you condemn others.”
- Outright lies: “What do you want to condemn me about? Abortion? I am against it just like you! On homosexuality? I say exactly what the Church teaches.” Read some examples of his real opinion on abortion and homosexuality at the bottom of the page here and over here.
The tragic truth about Fr. Gravel is that he is no different from your typical cowardly dissenter. When Church officials aren’t looking, he makes rabid pro-choice and homosexualist statements. But once Catholics start to complain, he pretends that he’s a canonized saint. We’ve seen this pattern many times over the years. Remember what Jesus said about wolves in sheep’s clothing?
One last note: in the first sentence of the email, Fr. Gravel challenges our reader to become informed about what he really teaches. Socon or Bust will take him up on that offer and expose some errors propagated by this priest in his homilies. Coming soon to a theatre near you.
Please pray for Fr. Gravel. And please keep sending your concerns to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith at email@example.com. Even if you’re a concerned Protestant, please feel welcome to send a message to the CDF.
Original email in French from Fr. Gravel to a Socon or Bust reader:
Raymond Gravel ptre
