Earliest known images of Apostles point to early devotion to Saints

Archeologists have uncovered some new images of the Apostles in the catacombs of Rome dating to the 4th century A.D. So we now have additional evidence that early Christians had a devotion to the Apostles.

“This is a very important find because these are the earliest known images of Andrew and John. For Peter there are depictions from the first half of the fourth century, but never alone in an icon,” said Barbara Mazzei, the archaeologist who led the project under the auspices of the Vatican’s Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology.

“The discovery is testimony to the introduction and spread of a cult of the apostles in the early years of Christianity.” (Source)
