Dallas Bishop Condemns Pro-Abortion Priest Lecture

Some bishops are taking a stand.  It’s a delight to the soul.

The latest dissenting priest to get raked over the coals is named Fr. Charles E. Curran.  He used to teach at Catholic University of America until a Cardinal named Joseph Ratzinger, as head of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, banned him from teaching theology at any Catholic school because his dissent was too extreme. That was way back in 1986.  The priest has criticized the Church’s teaching on abortion, euthanasia, masturbation, homosexuality, fornication, and divorce.

The priest is apparently still on the lecture circuit.  Now he’s gonna vomit his garbage at Southern Methodist University.

But the bishop of Dallas, Most Rev. Kevin J. Farrell,  isn’t going to sit on his hands.  God bless you, your Grace!  Lead the way and we’ll follow!

Now we just need to laicize this “priest” to finish the job that Cardinal Ratzinger started.

DALLAS, Texas, October 27, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Catholic bishop of Dallas has preemptively condemned a lecture by a dissident professor and priest who is scheduled to criticize the U.S. bishops’ unequivocal stance against the killing of unborn children.

Rev. Charles E. Curran, the Elizabeth Scurlock Professor of Human Values at Southern Methodist University (SMU), is planning to deliver an on-campus lecture noon Thursday entitled “The U.S. Catholic Bishops and Abortion Legislation: A Critique from Within the Church.”

Bishop Kevin J. Farrell of Dallas

“Curran’s lecture will examine how U.S. Roman Catholic bishops have made opposition to legal abortion their primary social issue, and will challenge the bishops from a theological perspective for claiming too much certitude in their position,” states an SMU press release. In the release, Curran states that, “There should be room in the Catholic Church for different positions on this issue.”

Dallas bishop Kevin J. Farrell released a statement published by SMU Catholic Campus Ministry online expressing his regret over Curran’s thesis.

“I wish to point out that the Bishops of the US have never changed their position on the question of abortion,” wrote Farrell. “The act of directly taking an unborn life is wrong and has always been wrong. This has been the constant teaching of the Church.”

A supporter of the dissenter, Fr. Richard P. McBrien, is another dissenter extraordinaire. He teaches at Notre Dame University and is a columnist at that lefty-Catholic paper called the National Catholic Reporter. Some bishop needs to talk some sense into that man too.

  1. Pro-abortion Priest? What god does he worship? What kind of people would go to hear him? Science and technology prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that children in the warmth of their mother’s womb, are living and growing human beings.

  2. Although we need to back and support the Church’s teaching, we cannot do so at the cost of more human souls. Please remember to pray for these priests, that they return to full communion with the Church in their teaching. One last request is to tone down the name calling and verbal attacks from both sides as it contributes nothing to the debate and raises people’s defenses making it harder to repent.
