BREAKING: Development & Peace To Suspend Funding of Mexican Groups

….

While we are fully satisfied with these responses from our partners regarding their work and our partnership relationships, we do not feel that these testimonials will be sufficiently strong to clearly and convincingly counter the allegations being levied against them, and, by association, against DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE and the Catholic Church in Canada.

Because of the need for a timely response and clarification by DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE, we have, in the interests of prudence and in respect for the concern of the bishops of Canada, our members, and our supporters, temporarily suspended funding support to all five partner groups, effective immediately. This action has been taken to underscore the seriousness with which we are addressing these allegations, and to provide a space for an indepth dialogue and review with our Mexican partners on the issues raised in this controversy. In no way should this be interpreted as a withdrawal of support or solidarity by DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE for the work of our partners, but rather as an opportunity to review our response to this situation together in a spirit of common reflection.

Read their entire communication here.

That’s a start, and we commend D&P for suspending the funds, but a temporary suspension is not what we had in mind. I hope it’s just the beginning.  If they are travelling to Mexico to investigate, however, they had better book flights to every country around the globe where our money is being used to fund abortion promoters.  (Hey, do you think they would let one of the LifeSite Reporters go with them on the flight?)

We keep on keeping on until all the blood money stops flowing.

Addendum:  What is the point of them flying to Mexico? To actually hear their partners deny the evidence that we’ve all seen? I really don’t see the point of it, actually.  Does anyone really believe they are going to convert on the issue of abortion after the visit or deny their past actions?  No.  So what is the purpose of this trip? Seems to me this is all futile window dressing that is not going to solve anything.

Here is what is going to solve it.  Immediately suspend ALL funding of ALL groups until a thorough and complete investigation is done of each and everyone. Then, reconfigure the National Board to include pro-life leaders who have a veto on where the money goes.  That is the only thing that is going to satisfy us.

  1. They also know there’s millions of money at stake with the collection of the 29th in just a few days. Sounds like damage control to make an effort to get their collection.
I don’t trust them. I didn’t hear what needed to be said to clean up this mess and ensure it doesn’t happen again.
    Too little, too late.

  2. I’m not happy with this action, either. How can CCODP ensure the abortion-related activities of the partner organizations will stop?

  3. This looks to me like political maneuvering to keep the money coming. They will get NONE of my money until they give me unequivocal and substantial evidence that it will never be used to advance the cause of abortion and the contraceptive culture of death. Satan has his claws in the Church and I will not help that serpent.

  4. This is a good start however, they won’t be getting any money from me until the can guarantee that not a single penny will be going to any international ‘family planning’ organizations.

  5. They will not get my money until this mess is cleared up. Church leaders should be appalled at what has transpired here. You see that Satan is work here. Bring out the watch dogs!!

  6. Addendum Above: What is the point of them flying to Mexico? To actually hear their partners deny the evidence that we’ve all seen? I really don’t see the point of it, actually. Does anyone really believe they are going to convert on the issue of abortion after the visit or deny their past actions? No. So what is the purpose of this trip? 7. This is an terrible piece of damage control, a textbook case of how NOT to handle a crisis. Allow me to translate into plain English what D&P is saying:

“Despite all the evidence, we still won’t admit that we screwed up and that our Mexican partners are pro-aborts. But given that pro-lifers are raising a stink and compromising our income stream, we will temporarily suspend funding to the Mexican groups and hope that the pro-lifers will soon forget about us.”

There no recognition of possible error. No repentance. No regret. No promise to fix the problem.

Note how they seem determined to stand by the Mexican pro-aborts to the bitter end: “In no way should this be interpreted as a withdrawal of support or solidarity by D&P for the work of our partners”

I have to question whether D&P is acting in good faith. People of good faith are quick to admit their mistakes and take corrective actions.

What we’re seeing from D&P, on the other hand, is the same dung we got from politicians during the early days of the sponsorship scandal: denials, symbolic gestures and hot air.

We need our own Gomery inquiry.

  8. Sorry, I don’t buy it. Development and Peace knows exactly what they are doing in Mexico and other counties and the move to temporarly halt funds is just a move to to keep the funds coming in.

    I don’t trust their motives.
There is no apology or omission of error in their letter.
NO money from me. NOT EVER AGAIN.

  9. John, the only question now is: WHO IS PAYING FOR THE FLIGHTS TO MEXICO? That it the question that I will be asking a) my bishop b) my pastor and c) Development and Peace.
When Dr. Simone, from Food for Children (an amazing truly Catholic charity, with NO ADMINISTRATION COSTS WHATSOEVER) travels to Third World countries to bring food and medical assistance, he pays for his own flights out of his own pocket.
Why should good-intentioned Catholics in Canada fund a fishing expedition in Mexico that could easily be done from here?
Better yet, why doesn’t Development and Peace take a page out of lifesitenews, and learn how to use make maximum, and ethical, use of their donations?
I’m sure the poor would rather have the food donation, than yet another visit from a rich North American.

  10. They won’t get a dime from me until I know, for sure, that none of the money is being funneled–not only to pro-abortion groups– but any group that supports condoms and the like.

  11. I have never given to Development and Peace just because of my doubting gut feeling about them.

To temporarily stop dealing with Mexico is probably after the fact that they have already received their money from CIDA – I, of course, do not know this as fact. I do know that when I talked with the Ottawa representative four or five years’ ago, meeting CIDA’s requirements were high on their agenda as, I believe, CIDA met their donations one to one.

Development and Peace does not have my blessing as yet.

  12. No money from me or my family to Sharelife: there’s a splendid support group for parents in Oshawa called Rose of Durham which will benefit from my $$. We pro-lifers need to put our money where our mouth is and in addition to protesting abortion, we need to support the young people in pregnancy crises.

  13. This is a real opportunity for spring cleaning at D & P and at the CCCB which facilitates this chicanery. Leadership comes to the fore when a group is confronted with this kind of challenge. Perhaps there will be a truly brave and courageous bishop in this country who will stand up and say “enough” Let us pray for such a man as this.

  14. Nothing will be accomplished by trips to Mexico or elsewhere. D&P tourits will simply be fed the “we didn’t do anything wrong” line already accepted by Brunelli. The CCCB needs to clean house by replacing the entire administration of D&P with really Catholic people.
