Benedict, Islam, and the Prophesy of Fatima

On May 13, 1917, the Mother of God appeared to three shepherd children in Fátima, Portugal. The extraordinary visions, occuring on the 13th of the month for six months, are perhaps the most celebrated and famous of the Catholic faith. According to one of the child seers, the Blessed Mother confided three secrets to the children and exhorted the children and the world to do penance and pray the rosary. An entire account of the Fátima apparitions can be read here.

Recently, I have been thinking a lot about Fátima, and its significance to our current situation with the Muslim world, in light of the big broohahaha generated as a result of Pope Benedict’s comments. Being of Portuguese heritage (my parents are first generation immigrants), I had always been fascinated by the fact that Fátima had a connection with the Muslim world. (The city itself is located about 120 km north of Lisbon in central Portugal.) Fátima is originally an Arabic name, once given to one of Mohammed’s favoured daughters. It is therefore very popular name given to women among Roman Catholics and Muslims alike.

After eight centuries of Muslim rule of the Iberian penincula, the Christian kingdoms of north Portugal and Spain defeated and conquered the Southern Muslim forces. The Reconquista, as it is commonly referred to, resulted in the capture of a Muslim princess from Alcácer do Sal named Fátima who was so named in honour of Mohammed’s daughter. Of his daughter, Fátima, Mohammed once said: “She has the highest place in heaven after the Virgin Mary.” After her capture, she was betrothed to the leader of the Christian forces, and later baptized into the Catholic faith before her marriage in 1158. The village of modern day Fátima was given the Islamic name of this Princess.

Reports from Fátima indicate that thousands of Muslims make pilgrimages to the Catholic Shrine every year because of the devotion to the Blessed Virgin in the Islamic religion. The Koran mentions the Blessed Virgin Mary 30 times, while no other woman’s name is mentioned. In the Koran, Mary is described as “Virgin, ever Virgin.”

Now, let’s fast forward to the year 2000 when the third and final secret of Fátima was finally released. Here is a fair description of the events leading up to the release of the third secret by the Vatican:

Due to the long delay in revealing the third secret, all manner of theories circulated in the Church. Some claimed that it spoke of nuclear war, the deposition of the Pope, the assassination of a Pope, or the replacement of a Pope by an imposter. Finally, during a visit to Portugal for the beatification of the visionaries Francisco and Jacinta (Lucia was still alive), Pope John Paul II announced through his Cardinal Secretary of State, Cardinal Angelo Sodano, that he had decided to make the text of the third secret public. A few months later, the text was released by the Vatican, together with a discussion of the meaning of the text.

“After the two parts which I have already explained, at the left of Our Lady and a little above, we saw an Angel with a flaming sword in his left hand; flashing, it gave out flames that looked as though they would set the world on fire; but they died out in contact with the splendour that Our Lady radiated towards him from her right hand: pointing to the earth with his right hand, the Angel cried out in a loud voice: ‘Penance, Penance, Penance!’  And we saw in an immense light that is God: ‘something similar to how people appear in a mirror when they pass in front of it’ a Bishop dressed in White, ‘we had the impression that it was the Holy Father’. Other Bishops, Priests, men and women Religious going up a steep mountain, at the top of which there was a big Cross of rough-hewn trunks as of a cork-tree with the bark; before reaching there the Holy Father passed through a big city half in ruins and half trembling with halting step, afflicted with pain and sorrow, he prayed for the souls of the corpses he met on his way; having reached the top of the mountain, on his knees at the foot of the big Cross he was killed by a group of soldiers who fired bullets and arrows at him, and in the same way there died one after another the other Bishops, Priests, men and women Religious, and various lay people of different ranks and positions. Beneath the two arms of the Cross there were two Angels each with a crystal aspersorium in his hand, in which they gathered up the blood of the Martyrs and with it sprinkled the souls that were making their way to God.” (source)

The subsequent interpretation of this account by the Vatican sees these events in the past and referring principally to John Paul II’s near death at the hands at Mehmet Ali Agca, a Muslim Turkish assassin. John Paul II was shot on May 13, 1981, sixty-four years to the day of the first apparition at Fátima. Even Pope John Paul II is said to have believed that the text refers to the failed assassination attempt by Mehmet Ali Agca on May 13, 1981, against him.

While this is probably true, we have to wonder if the story of Fátima is completed. Our Lady promised that her Immaculate Heart would eventually triumph. And most of the commentary up to now has always focused on the evil of Communism since she herself predicted that Russia would spread her errors throughout the world. But buried in there somewhere is Fátima. Why did heaven choose this village, the village named after a Muslim princess who converted to the Catholic faith?

In the current turmoil with the Muslim world, it is almost too inconceivable to believe what her appearance at Fátima might suggest:  the conversion of the Muslim world to the Catholic Faith.  How this can possibly happen, nobody really knows and even my speculations here are just mere musings on my part. Then again, if the West is plunged into a future conflict with the Muslim world, you have to wonder whether the the Third Secret really applies more to Benedict than it does to John Paul II.

  1. For years I have been saying the same thing that you are saying. I emailed our President and told him about Fatima. ( not enough space for the whole story , only so many characters are allowed) I am praying to Our Lady that she will intercede for us. God does have a plan. It does include Our Lady of Fatima. Jesus died for Muslims too. We are all sinners in need of salvation. I think that if converted, Barack Obama would be a great force for good. In the Bible, there are stories of how women such as Jael and Judith killed the leader of Israel’s enemies by striking at the head. Another women saved Israel by using her beauty and interceding for her people to the enemy king. All this is a foreshadowing of the role of Our Lady. Please pray for our President that Our Lady will somehow change his heart and mind.

  2. If you read the statements of many Catholic visionaries you’ll see predictions of a final crusade or holy war against Islam which leads to their defeat and disillusionment with Mohamed and his god Allah. Then most convert to the Catholic faith. This is developing now. It will take place in an Muslim uprising in Europe which starts in France, then Italy and spreads across Europe. Civil war against the EU in which a great Catholic soldier political leader rises to win, but only after Turkey invades to support the uprising (backed by Russia). It will be triggered by a terrorist attack in the Vatican. I don’t have space here to go into all the news I’ve read lately which supports this scenario.

  3. I don’t think that we have heard the end of Ali Agca. I think he will attempt to kill Pope Benedict in the near future. Maybe even at Fatima, Portugal on May 13, 2010. Agca is an evil person from hell. He would love nothing more to kill the present pontiff. He is a demented individual whose only aim is to do vilolence to the papacy and the Catholic church.

  4. This is all very strange…I don’t think that Fatima in Islam and the Virgin Mary in Christianity are the same person. I think muslims have their own interpretations as to what they think is true. They view Christians as unbelievers and infidels! So therefore I think Christianity should be separate from Islam. According to Islam, Fatima died she was married to her father’s cousin Ali she had sons I can’t remember how many. She requested for no one to know where she was buried. Til this day, her burial place remains unknown! Umm Islam is just soo different from other religions, I just can’t say that muslims are the same as christians. Mary was the one that the angel came to and she was to be the virgin chosen to give birth to Jesus. Fatima was born because her father PBUH went to heaven and then he tasted the fruit of paradise and was sent back to lay with khadijah his wife and then she became pregnant with fatimah and the hur al ayn helped khadijah with the birth. Fatimah was said to be like the angels in heaven in terms of her looks. Shiites consider her to be the human hur, with black eyes and a saffron complexion! So I think you all are trying to link these two women together and the only thing that connects fatima is the place that the three children saw mary at. But that’s the only connection I see…

  5. The Muslim princes was forced to convert after her capture, so that would have a twistd message. She was not any thing special or holy. The name does not belong to her but to millions of Muslims before her.

So the only explination is that the fact that the village named after the muslim prophet’s daughter Fatima, the vergin is sending a message to the west that this man Mahammad who was prophesised in the Bible via his decendents “KEDARITES” is the last prophet.

One wory why the vatican keeps other people’s secrets ?? wait till a thing happened and then reveal it. How do we know the truth. The so called secrets should have been let out and people wait to see if they happened. As for me i think the secrets were so dangerous to the Christian world that the 3 kids had to be shut & controlled.

There is a new mosque in Rome in the Vittorio Emmanule locality. It is one of many new ones all over the city.Today afternoon at 2p.m many Muslims mostly Bangladeshi are seen at the mosque for the Friday prayers. The mosque is alongside a Church. A mosque alongside a church is a source of tension at least for Catholics has been the experience of many.

There are small mosques in many localities of Rome and during the Ramazan fasting period the siren can be heard in many places.

In an hour’s time there will be a protest at the Piazza Repubblica, Rome. Pamphlets have been distributed, in Bengali/Bangladeshi inviting Muslims to a protest at 3 p.m against ‘the attack on the Islamic religion and the Prophet Muhammad’.

How will they respond when they know Vatican Council II says outside the Church there is no salvation (AG 7) and Lumen Gentium 14 says those who know about Jesus and the Church and yet do not enter are oriented to Hell. This would include all Muslims in Rome who know about the Vatican and who know about Jesus and the Church and yet do not convert. This includes their leaders.

Our Lady at Medugorje has said that the end times will be marked by religious wars. She had the same message in her locutions to the Italian priest Fr.Stefano Gobbi of the Marian Movement of Priests.

She also also said that all the enemies of the Church would combine to eliminate the Church. She was referring to the Masons and Communists allied with the Islamists.

She said that in the past she held the hand of God the Father from falling upon the centre of the Church, that is in Europe. It was always protected from the attacks by the Muslims. About the future… ? ( Read the book!)

It is not known what Our Lady’s exact message was to Bruno Cornacchiola, at time of the apparition on 12 April 1947 at Tre Fontane, Roma. It was something ominous. The Vatican did not accept it and then downplayed the apparitions.

She was trying to tell us something.

It is curious, she was not wearing a blue mantle but – a green one.-Lionel Andrades
