Benedict Closing Cafeteria: Catholic Politicians No More Free Lunch

The days are quickly approaching when Catholic politicians will actually have to live up to their faith in public life.

“Earlier last week, Pope Benedict XVI made political waves when he told reporters he supported the Mexican bishops in their warning to politicians who supported legalizing abortion that they would face excommunication with the first new abortion. The Pope said the Mexican bishops decision was not “arbitrary” because canon law “says that the killing of an innocent child is incompatible with receiving communion, which is receiving the body of Christ.” (Source)

Why is this so difficult to understand? If you are a Catholic, you are required to remain ONE PERSON. That is, you believe the same things publicly as you do privately and you act in the same manner in both spheres of life. We call such a combination of action and belief “integrity”. We call the opposite position, which seeks to hold two contradictory views in separate arenas, “incoherency and hypocrisy”.

A Catholic politician is supposed to uphold the Church’s teaching in public life. That includes opposing abortion, sodomy, divorce, etc. etc. etc. … and yes, in case you were wondering, even opposing contraception. If the public doesn’t like it, they can vote for someone else. That’s what we call democracy.

When someone like Dalton McGuinty, for instance, claims to be Catholic, then he has to “walk the talk” as I told him here in our all-candidate’s debate back during the 2003 Ontario election.

Otherwise, why should he claim something he is not? If he’s Catholic, what am I? His presence in our Communion sullies the brand name and makes a mockery out of the Eucharist which is supposed to signify our unity of belief.

It seems that McGuinty has not yet learned his lesson:

“I have a different constituency than does the Pope. I am responsible for representing all kinds of people from all kinds of different backgrounds, different faiths, different cultures, different traditions.” (Source)

Oh stop it, Dalton. The only constituency you represent are the shills for abortion and homoerotic “rights”. Most faiths, cultures, and traditions abhor the agenda you prop up. You certainly do have a different constituency than the Pope does. He ministers to God’s people. You pander to the Lobby. Stop the excuses and just admit that you depart from the Catholic Faith on many major points and therefore excommunicate yourself from our Communion. As the Holy Father said in the article:

“Yes, this excommunication was not an arbitrary one, but is allowed by Canon (church) law, which says that the killing of an innocent child is incompatible with receiving communion, which is receiving the body of Christ,” Benedict told Reuters.”

Check out the last paragraph of this letter for an official opinion of people like McGuinty and the other pro-abort policitians’ status in the Church.

For all the 18 Democrats, Dalton McGuinty and all of other Federal and Provincial politicians who like to have it both ways, Benedict is closing the cafeteria.

If you want to enter in the future, you will have to pay up, just like everyone else.

In other words, you must profess the Catholic faith in its entirety in all places and in all times. Period.

  1. I hope that there are many letters to the editor decrying Mcguinty’s stance. I hope that the press stops calling him a Catholic because of this.
