n Mark 10:8-9, Jesus states,
But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall be one. So they are no longer two but one. What therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder.
Genesis 2:24 states,
Therefore a man leaves his father and mother and cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh.
The Words of Jesus Christ correlate with the Words of the Almighty Heavenly Father in his sacred Word regarding the institution of marriage. God is the author of marriage. God who is love, created man out of love also calls man to love and live in his grace and kindness. Matrimony is a divine institution, instituted by God for procreation of the human race. Matrimony is a Sacrament in Catholic theology, a sign instituted by Christ to give grace. Marriage is one specific incarnational way in which the saving work of Christ enters people's lives. Genesis 1:27-28 states,
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it."
Matrimony is a divine - and no by means a human institution - because it was ordained by God, and the Church teaches it is a Sacrament holy and sacred. Genesis 2:18 gives evidence that Almighty God has stated it is not good for man to be alone. Ecclesiastes 4:9 gives evidence that two are better than one. Ecclesiastes 9:9 states,
Enjoy life with the wife that you love, all the days of your vain life.
Sacred Scripture gives definitive affirmation of the call of the married couple to holiness, to serve the living God. In the Old Testament Book of Joshua, in the renewal of the covenant at Shechem, let us never forget and implement the magnificent words of Joshua in our own married lives. Look at the words of Joshua. Joshua 24:15:
But as for me and my household will serve the Lord.
This is the main obligation of any Household! Husband, wife and children: "To serve the Lord!" Yes! Serve the Lord!
Sacred Scripture begins with creation and gives affirmative definitive verification that man who was created in God's image and kindness and concludes with the wedding feast of the Lamb. Look at the following Biblical texts: Genesis 1:26-27 and Revelations 19:7-9. The Wedding Feast of the Lamb is the Eucharistic celebration in the holy sacrifice of the Mass. The close intimacy of Jesus Christ the Lord and the Catholic who receives the Eucharist in the state of grace is a Biblical absolute. In John 6:56-57, Jesus exhorts,
He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me.
The intimate personal relationship of Christ in the Sacrament of the Eucharist correlates to the magnificent grace of God given in the wonderful Sacrament of Matrimony. In the Sacrament of Matrimony, the grace of God is given for procreation of God's human race. In John 3:29, John the Baptist calls Jesus "the Bridegroom". In Revelations, the messianic eschatological banquet is revealed as the marriage feast of the Lamb and his Bride. In Revelations 21:1-4, the Bride, the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, the bride of Christ is revealed in the Parousia. The headship of the glorified Lamb is evident is the spousal union with the New Jerusalem.
The Church teaches that marriage is a covenant relationship in which a man and woman live together their whole lives to love and support each other. They must live to the openness to God, open to the procreation and education of children. Matrimonial consent is defined as an act of the will by which each party gives and accepts the perpetual and exclusive right to actions, which are in themselves fitted for the generation of children.
Although the Biblical texts give affirmation that the man should be the spiritual head, let us never forget that the false assumption that males are superior to women and women have their place (which is subordinate) casts a shadow over family life. Self-centered behavior on the part of either spouse undermines married life. The ideal of mutual submission in marriage must be addressed on many levels. When either spouse are psychologically abusive or physically violent there should be extensive marriage counseling by a competent authority. The Apostle Paul in his epistle to the Ephesians 5:21-29 gives definitive evidence regarding headship. St. Paul in his epistles sees hierarchy as implicit, in the mode of creation, in male priority. In 1 Timothy 2:12-15 St. Paul states,
I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.. But woman will be saved through childbearing--if they continue in faith, love, and holiness with propriety.
In Ephesians 5:25, St. Paul exhorts,
Husbands love your wives, as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her.
In 1 Peter 3:1-7, St. Peter gives definitive evidence of the behavior of wives and husbands. Listen to the magnificent words of St. Peter that husband and wife are heirs together of the grace of life.
Proverbs 5: 18 and Malachi 2:14-15 gives definitive evidence to have a constant delight in one's wife. Yes, rejoice with the wife of thy youth. 1 Samuel 1:8 gives evidence the wife should be comforted. In 1 Corinthians 7:3, St. Paul gives definitive affirmation that husbands must render benevolence unto their wives. Sacred Scripture gives magnificent definitive instruction and duties of wives:
Titus 2:4: Love their husbands.
1 Corinthians 7:3-5: Wives must render benevolence and be faithful to their husbands.
Ephesians 5:33: Revere their husbands.
1 Corinthians 14:34 and Titus 2:5: Obedience to their husbands. Wives must manifest holy and faithful lives. They should be adorned with modesty, sobriety, meekness, and be virtuous.
The following Biblical texts give definitive evidence of virtuous and good wives: 1 Timothy 3:11-1 and Peter 3:3-5. Proverbs 18:22 states,
He who finds a good wife, finds a good thing.
The wife of a noble and good character can be found in Proverbs 31:10-31. Please read this Biblical text.
When problems occur, turn to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Through the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed through faith for faith. The gospel message contains the great promise of emancipation from sin and from expression in matters of domination and subjugation. The intimacy of the husband and wife absolutely correlates with Jesus Christ and the Church. The Lord Jesus Christ imparts his agape love, the love of his heart to the hearts of those who are married in the Sacrament of love. The relationship of Matrimony brought together by God in no way can be terminated. Look at the following Biblical texts. In Matthew 5:32 and Mark 10:11-12 Jesus gives a definitive declaration that one cannot divorce. Therefore marriage is indissoluble. Jesus gives affirmation that one who divorces and gets remarried is committing adultery.
An annulment in ecclesiastical law is the official declaration by competent Church authority in regards to marriage, that for lawful reasons, a previous act of contract was invalid and consequently null and void. It is not a divorce. Competent Church authority, usually Canon Lawyers, handles annulments. Canon Law experience is an absolute mandate in handling of annulments. Please, if one has difficulty in marriage get competent counseling and do not listen to anyone regarding annulments unless one has absolute profound knowledge of Canon Law.
The Bible and the Church absolutely teach that divorce is forbidden. In the Old Testament Scriptures gives evidence that a bill of divorce or repudiation of marriage can be found in certain circumstances. In Deuteronomy 24:1-4, Scripture gives evidence of the bill of divorce. A bill of repudiation can be seen. Marriage was sacred and protected by the death penalty against adulterers. Leviticus 20:10 and Deuteronomy 22:22 give affirmative evidence of the death penalty against adultery. Malachi 2:14-16 gives affirmative evidence of the Lord's witness to Israel as a covenant relationship between man and wife. Here we see that the Almighty God hates divorce. In Matthew 19:3-12, Scripture gives affirmative evidence in the words of Jesus Christ that one cannot divorce. Jesus states,
For your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce. But from the beginning it was not so.
In 1 Corinthians 7: 10-11, St. Paul gives affirmative instruction from the Lord that the wife should not separate from the husband, but if she does let her remain single or else be reconciled to her husband and the husband shall not divorce his wife. Not only did Christ wish to condemn any form of polygamy or polyandry, and other external dishonorable acts, he forbade any willful thoughts or desires regarding adultery. In Matthew 5:27-30, Scripture gives evidence of lustful adultery through evil thoughts and desires. Jesus exhorts,
But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Marriage is not only a contract but a covenant relationship instituted by God. The highest tribute paid to marriage in the Old Testament Scriptures is the adoption of the union of marriage of the covenant union of God for his people of Israel. Sacred Scripture gives absolute definitive verification that marriage is such a great Sacrament, and the Apostle St. Paul compares it with the relationship and union with Christ and his Church. This magnificent union of Christ and his Church can be truly represented by a holy marriage, a marriage that is consummated and ratified in the teachings and actions of Christ Jesus.
In Ephesians 5: 21-32, St. Paul gives magnificent Biblical verification of Christ's relationship with the Church that absolutely correlates of the marriage bond of husband and wife. St. Paul in his epistles has already magnificently contracted the bond between his person and the person of the glorified Christ. No union could be more intimate. The Christian faithful in the Sacrament of Matrimony receives in the total surrender of their bodies to one another the magnificent grace and blessings of God. Being rooted in the personal and self-giving of the couple, and being required by the good of the children, the indissolubility of marriage finds its ultimate truth in the plan God has manifested in his Divine Revelation. He wills and he communicates the indissolubility of marriage as a fruit, a sign, and a requirement of the absolutely faithful love God has for man and the Lord Jesus Christ has for the Church.
Listen closely at the words of the present Pope, Pope John Paul II, Familiaris Consortio 20:
To bear witness to the inestimable value of indissolubility and fidelity of marriage is one of the most precious and most urgent tasks of Christian couples in our time.
Colossians 3:18-21 and 1 Peter 3:1-7 give instructions in family headship and authority. Sacred Scripture gives magnificent instruction in regards to the duties of both husband and wife. St. Paul castigates immorality and adultery in his first epistle to the Corinthians. He gives affirmative Biblical evidence that the body is not meant for immorality. In 1 Corinthians 6: 15-18, St. Paul states,
Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who joins himself to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, the two shall become one. But he who is united to the Lord becomes one in spirit with him. Shun immorality. Every other sin which a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. Do you not know your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
By the grace of God through faithfulness one can overcome concupiscence.
The Apostle St. Paul gives a mandate in his first epistle to the Corinthians where he gives a Biblical mandate that if one cannot exercise self control, it is better to marry than burn with passion (1 Corinthians 7:1-39). In Hebrews 13:4 St. Paul exhorts,
Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled; for God will judge the immoral and adulterous.
The grace and blessings of God are poured out in the Sacrament of Matrimony. In 1 Corinthians 7:12-17 St. Paul gives evidence that the unbelieving husband or wife is consecrated by the believing husband or wife in this great Sacrament. The Old Testament Scriptures gives evidence that a large family was a blessing from God in Genesis 24:60 and Psalm 127:3!
There are Biblical texts in the gospels that give affirmative evidence in which the messianic period is described as a wedding feast: Matthew 9:15-17;nbsp; Matthew 22:1;nbsp; Mark 2:19! Revelations 19:9 gives evidence of the wedding feast of the Lamb. Sacred Scripture is a road map of life for instructions in marriage. 1 Corinthians 11:2-16;nbsp; Ephesians 5:21-33;nbsp; Colossians 3:15-19;nbsp; Titus 2: 4-10;nbsp; 1 Peter 3:1-7! Proverbs 5:18 states,
Let your fountains be blessed and rejoice in the wife of your youth.
Proverbs 12: 4 gives evidence that a god wife is the crown of her husband. Proverbs 31: 10 gives evidence that
A good wife is far more precious than jewels.
Proverbs 31:10-31 gives affirmative evidence of the magnificent blessings of a good wife - yes, a wife of a good and noble character. Sirach 40:18-24 gives affirmation of the blessings of a good wife.
All Sacraments derive their power from the Incarnation of Jesus Christ. The Sacrament of Matrimony comes from Jesus Christ the source of eternal life. Christ himself stressed the indissolubility and firmness of the marriage bond. What God has joined together, let no man put asunder.
May God Richly Bless You! Amen! Hallelujah!
